Piezocones and Electric CPT Cones - Without Amplifier

Electric CPT cones and piezocones are high-precision measuring instruments purposely developed for Cone Penetration Testing, the most advanced type of geotechnical soil investigation. 
The (piezo-)cones are available with different cross sectional surfaces, i.e. the 10 cm² and 15 cm². The cones presented on this page are so-called ELC-type cones and have no built-in amplifier. The design of these ELC-cones is called the compression type lay-out; this means that the strain gauges (sensors) measuring the cone resistance (qc) and the local sleeve friction (fs) are mounted on separate measuring bodies.
The cones with a cross sectional surface of 10 cm² have no built-in inclinometer. These cones can only be used in conjunction with an external inclinometer. The cones with a cross sectional surface of 15 cm² though can be supplied with a biaxial inclinometer, that is integrated in the cone body just above the conical tip. This inclinometer sensor measures the deviation from the vertical axis in 2 directions and assures rapid alarm, when the cone hits an obstacle or when it exceeds a previously set value. The ELC-cones without built-in inclinometer can be fitted with an external inclinometer, that can be mounted on top of the cone.
The ELC-type electric CPT cones in standard lay-out measure only the tip resistance (qc) and the local sleeve friction (fs). A piezocone is in fact a standard electric CPT cone equipped with an extra pressure sensor; it measures these same parameters plus the insitu pore pressure and is suitable for the performance of so-called dissipation tests. All parameters are measured continuously and simultaneously.
The signal output from the ELC-type (piezo-)cones is an Ampère signal. It is transferred to the surface by means of a string of CPT sounding cables provided with gold-plated Lemo connectors. This string of cables goes to the datalogger where the analogue signal is converted into a digital signal. The digital signal is then sent to a computer for recording and further processing.
All ELC-type cones are designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with international standards (including ISO 22476-1, ASTM D5778-12, etc.)) are temperature compensated and suitable for Class 1, 2, 3 and 4 Cone Penetration Testing. The piezocones are also suitable for dissipation tests.
