Lost Tip Drilling Method (Hammer)

When soil sampling and profile description is not required, the drilling procedure can be executed fast and efficiently by applying the lost tip drilling method.

The lost tip is hammered into the ground using a Wacker gasoline motor hammer, which is placed on top of the casing tubes.

The lost tip assures a very straight bore hole that is slightly larger in diameter than the casing in order to reduce lateral friction on the string of tubes. This makes it possible to reach greater depths.

On reaching the desired depth a filter tube / piezometer standpipe can be lowered through the string of casing tubes. Subsequently the string of casing tubes can be retracted using the 2-person operated rod puller in combination with wedge type pulling clamp.

The lost tip drilling method is successfully applied to place small diameter monitoring well pipes for environmental research. The lost tip remains in the soil when the string of casing tubes is retracted. This does not cause any environmental issues as the lost tip is manufactured of cast iron.
