Inclinometer Casing Tubes

The inclinometer casing tubes are designed to accommodate all commercially available inclinometers. They provide access and precise orientation for both wheel-mounted and fixed inclinometers. They are primarily used to monitor the stability of embankments, dikes slopes, rock cuts, foundations, excavation walls, piles, coffer dams, slope areas, etc.

The tubes and sturdy couplings are self-aligning and pop-riveted together, making assembly quick and easy. The joints are waterproofed using either glue or sealing tape. The tube has four wheel grooves spaced at 90° intervals for 2 inclinometer orientations, and is manufactured from either impact-resistant PVC or ABS ensuring a lightweight, strong, environmentally resistant casing with grooves free from spiralling assuring accuracy guidance resulting in high quality measurements.

The tubes come in lengths of 3 meters each and are available in 4 different outer diameter, i.e. 55 mm (2.16 inch), 60mm (2.36 inch) and 70 mm (2.75 inch). The design and material are extra strong to withstand the external forces of grouting or earth pressures.

The inclinometer casing tube is specially designed for inclinometer measurements. They combine 3 functions:

  1. They provide access for the inclinometer allowing it to perform subsurface measurements
  2. They control the orientation of the inclinometer via its internal grooves
  3. They conform themselves to the movement of the surrounding ground

When you buy inclinometer casing tubes it is important to consider the casing diameter and the groove shape.

The movement of the ground causes the inclinometer casing to deform. Eventually, the casing is sheared off or pinched closed. When that happens, the probe can no longer pass through, and no more readings can be obtained. The strength to withstand this collapse load is therefore really important.

In general, larger diameter casing will offer a longer useful life, because it can absorb more deformation before access is closed to the probe.

The 70 mm (2.75 inch) casing is the largest diameter. It is suitable for all uses and especially recommended for landslides and long-term monitoring. It is also appropriate for monitoring multiple shear zones or very narrow shear zones.

The 60mm (2.36 inch) and 55 mm (2.16 inch) casing are suitable for construction projects. They can also be used for slope stability monitoring if only a moderate degree of deformation is expected.

The accuracy of inclinometer measurements is directly influenced by the quality of the casing grooves. The best grooves provide a regular, flat surface for the wheels of the probe.

The grooves should be slightly wider than the wheels, to permit some side to side movement as the inclinometer passes through curves. If the grooves are too tight, the wheels will climb out of the grooves and jeopardize the reading.
